While you and your team might be returning from vacation, cybercriminals are relentlessly active. Research from ProofPoint and Check Point reveals a significant surge in phishing attacks during the summer months. Discover how to remain vigilant and safeguard your business.
Why Does The Risk Spike In Summer?
Cyber attackers exploit the summer travel season by masquerading as popular hotel and Airbnb platforms, according to Check Point Research. They identified a 55% rise in new vacation-related website domains registered in May 2025 compared to last year, with over 39,000 domains created. Alarmingly, one out of every 21 domains was flagged as malicious or suspicious.
Additionally, the late summer back-to-school period triggers an increase in phishing emails impersonating legitimate university communications targeting students and staff. Even if your business isn’t directly affected, employees checking personal emails on work devices can inadvertently invite cyber threats. A single careless click could compromise your entire company’s data.
How To Protect Yourself And Your Team
Although AI enhances cybersecurity and streamlines processes, it also enables attackers to craft more convincing phishing scams. Training yourself and your team to recognize suspicious signs is crucial to avoid falling victim.
Essential Safety Tips to Prevent Cyber Attacks:
• Vigilantly scrutinize suspicious emails. Don’t rely solely on spotting spelling errors or awkward phrasing—AI can generate polished phishing emails. Always verify the sender’s email address and carefully inspect any visible links to ensure their authenticity.
• Verify URLs thoroughly. Watch for misspelled links or unusual domain extensions like .today or .info, which are often associated with scam websites.
• Access websites directly. Instead of clicking on links in emails or messages, manually type the website address into your browser to avoid phishing traps.
• Activate Multifactor Authentication (MFA). MFA adds an extra layer of security, ensuring that even if credentials are compromised, your sensitive data remains protected.
• Exercise caution on public WiFi. When using public networks, always connect through a VPN to shield your data, especially when handling sensitive information such as booking details or financial accounts.
• Avoid accessing personal emails on work devices. Mixing personal and professional accounts on company equipment increases vulnerability. Keep personal activities on personal devices and work-related tasks on work devices.
• Consult your MSP about endpoint security solutions. Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) tools monitor your devices, block phishing attempts and malicious downloads, and alert your MSP immediately upon detecting threats, minimizing potential damage.
Phishing tactics evolve rapidly, accelerated by AI advancements. Staying informed and educating your team remains the most effective defense. Keep your organization secure by staying alert and proactive.
